BUY THE GUIDE!

This is one of the few games where I can honestly say that buying the guide is worth it. There are so many little things about this game that you simply wouldn't know without the guide, and frankly, it simply isn't as much fun without it. First of all, there are secret weapons in about every other mission, and the only way to find them is by looting the corpses of your foes...something that isn't always practical in most missions. Second, the characters themselves are based off of other characters from classic "horror" literature. And finally, the game throws such overwhelming forces at you that frankly, if you don't know they're coming, you simply CAN'T be prepared for them. The guide solves all of these problems while being funny and well-written at the same time. Worth the twenty bucks.
Okay, now that I'm done reviewing the GUIDE for the game, let's get on to the game itself. Let me start with the positives: The voice-acting is nice, and the way the game weaves history throughout this fantasy is very well-done. You'll actually learn something by playing this game. Finally, the concept for the game itself is fresh, which is probably what led people to play it in the first place and is certainly all that kept me grinding through to the last levels.
Are you ready for the BAD parts? There's a lot. The graphics are poor, and that's being nice. The cover mechanic is inconsistent and hard to work to your advantage. The game presents a lot of weapons to use, but by the last half of the game, you'll be relying primarily on bazookas and heavy-hitting MS (magic) attacks. Missions take a long time to complete (at least an hour) and there's no checkpoint system or mid-mission saves, so if you goof up at the end you have to start all over. Despite having a character who can revive dead allies, if one of your main characters dies you can't revive them...you fail the mission.
All in all, this game had a lot of potential and fell short. It's only enjoyable with the guide.
