First thing first: Ninja Gaiden Black is the same game as Ninja Gaiden. The main game is 99% the same as the original. It's not a bad thing, but it's a fact nonetheless.
In fact, the original Ninja Gaiden was a triumphant, if not frustratingly difficult, game experience. The gameplay was fast, fluid and challenging. Your enemies came in large numbers with intelligent attack patterns. Your weapons were varied and upgradable. It was, however, one of the most notoriously difficult games made this decade.
All of these things remain the same in Black. But Tecmo throws in the other bells and whistles that came since the original. Like the Mission Mode, made for the hardcore gamer who wants a challenge. Much of this will be familiar to those who played the Hurricane Packs but provide gameplay for the player.
And then there's the additional difficulty settings. Ninja Dog is somewhat easier than Normal with armband and food Ayane gives you to help move things along. Don't get me wrong, it's still really hard, just more forgiving. Then there's the unlockable Master Ninja difficulty. Unless you have OCD, way too much time on your hands or a mental disorder, you will never complete this difficulty setting. It took everything I had to beat the game on Normal, I'd hate to even think about what Master Ninja is like. Rumor has it only one person at Team Ninja can beat it and I'm thinking he's a robot.
Ninja Gaiden is a great game, but I've already played it. Black adds some content, but not enough to go through the whole thing again. If you never played the original, however, you might as well pick up Black for the extras it offers.
