Short but sweet

Billed as a "remake" of Super Mario Bros. 1, it plays more like a mix of Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World 1. It also has a lot of homages to other Mario games, such as the appearance of Nessie from Mario 64, or the sand cacti from SMB2. Lots of fun stuff if you're a fan of the series.
The downside, if you want to call it that, is that the gameplay is VERY similar to the above-mentioned Mario games. That means that you're probably already good at this game! I beat the game in under 3 hours. The last set of levels were relatively difficult, but the others didn't cause much trouble. The boss battles were extremely easy in all cases (which is fine by me).
There's still plenty to do -- there's extra worlds to unlock, and you can replay levels in order to earn extra coins -- but after you beat the game, it loses a bit of the adrenaline feel -- you're just doing it for fun.
Oh, one other important thing: YOU CANNOT SAVE AT WILL. You can only save your game at certain checkpoint places which appear every four or five levels. This helps ratchet up the tension a bit, but it can be frustrating if you have very limited play time. Fortunately, the DS seems to be able to stay in "hibernate" mode for a long time, so that's an option in an emergency. Once you beat the game, it gets easier to save, so this is only a problem during the first few hours of play.
All in all, a great game, well worth renting. May be too short to be worth buying, but you won't regret the rental at all.
