This game is nothing like Nascar Thunder. The cars tend to only slide when involved in a crash. The car set-up area is too complicated for those who do not fully understand the technical side of auto racing.
There are two different styles of racing games on the Wii – the one where you blast your opponents with weapons (think Mario Kart Wii), and the ones that try to give the real feel of racing.
NASCAR the Game: Inside Line is in the latter group. You can play as a featured racer in any of the 38 tracks. And you can play against up to three other human opponents on any of those tracks.
The racing does have a real feel to it – you have to position yourself in the right spot to draft behind an opposing driver, then find the right spot to zoom around him to advance up the leader board.
But you’d better hope there aren’t any caution flags during the race because if the yellow flag comes out, the pace of the game’s fast pace is ruined.
First, you get the replay of the crash, then a loading screen for about ten seconds, then a look at the top 10 guys in the race, then another ten second loading screen, then you get the option of going into the pits or not (goes for about another ten seconds). Only after that do you get back into the race.
Another problem with this game is the Career Mode. When you first start off this mode, you get a really badly performing car – and will likely get blown off the racecourse by all the other drivers. It’s a good thing the Career Mode goes for more than one season – you’ll need several dozen races just to get your car up decent shape. It’s one mode most players will likely not try out.
And it’s best if you use the Wiimote/Nunchuck combo. Using just the Wiimote in the tilting sense is bad because those controls are very imprecise.
NASCAR the Game: Inside Line will thrill fans of NASCAR, but the spotty controls and the frustrating Career Mode will keep several players from taking the wheel. SKIP IT.
