If you take Pac-Man and Mrs. Pac-Man, make them give up the taste for dots and start eating the bad guys in earnest, then you get Munchables.
The idea in this 3D platformer is that you're a boy or girl creature. Each level, you go out and eat everything the same size as your character or smaller. As you gorge on bad guys, you level up and grow bigger, letting you eat larger enemes.
But sometimes you face up against a larger foe and can't eat it. Not all is lost; you can attack it and break it up into smaller pieces to chow down on. If they're still too big, you can break those up into even smaller sized bad guys. But you have to wolf down your food in this case; after a short while, the miniature villains will gather up together and form back into that one big bad guy.
Along the way, you can pick up magical acorns on most levels. Gather up all acorns in a level and you unlock an accessory. (Not a very good reward.)
There are several boss battles for you to fight, and they are interesting and fun - if you can deal with the game's fuzzy collision detection.
Another problem the game has is frequently there will be many, many opponents on screen and it's hard to get your eater to attack or eat one particular bad guy.
Also, parents may take issue with how each stage ends; our hero pops on screen and deficates thousands of orbs and other magical items. They may find it disturbing and keep their kids from playing this game.
Getting through the main game took me about three to four hours, and afterwards, there's a time trial mode where you race through all the levels again to see how fast you get through them. In all, it might take about six to ten hours to get through both modes.
Muncables delivers simple platforming fun - and a lot of it - for only $30. BUY IT.
