I have played every Monster Rancher to date. And, for me, Evo, was mostly more of the same. It did make some forward strives, but I felt in some areas it went backwards.
Forwards: having an overlying story was, to me, a good idea. It gave me a reason to keep training up my monsters. While the story wasn't near as strong as a real RPG, it was tight enough to get me to care about the characters, and what was coming next.
Backwards: Too easy. By the end of the game, I was only on my second generation of monsters, and they were killing things in one hit. I went through entire dungeons and never took damage.
Long running issue: Weeks...I hate having to go week by week. I want to be able to set up a regiment, and say "go" until my monster's stats go up. Having to keep doing the same thing over and over made me rush through parts of the game, rather than take time to really raise my monsters.
All in all, I had fun. But the game just didn't seem like enough. Especially for a game so late in the PS2 life cycle. I feel like they should have done more.
