I have played every Monster Rancher to date. And, for me, Evo, was mostly more of the same. It did make some forward strives, but I felt in some areas it went backwards.
Forwards: having an overlying story was, to me, a good idea. It gave me a reason to keep training up my monsters. While the story wasn't near as strong as a real RPG, it was tight enough to get me to care about the characters, and what was coming next.
Backwards: Too easy. By the end of the game, I was only on my second generation of monsters, and they were killing things in one hit. I went through entire dungeons and never took damage.
Long running issue: Weeks...I hate having to go week by week. I want to be able to set up a regiment, and say "go" until my monster's stats go up. Having to keep doing the same thing over and over made me rush through parts of the game, rather than take time to really raise my monsters.
All in all, I had fun. But the game just didn't seem like enough. Especially for a game so late in the PS2 life cycle. I feel like they should have done more.

I love the free ranging movement. I love the fact that you can ride your monsters. I also love the fact that you can do little missions for the guild even though i don't know how to do them yet. the only down side is that the characters don't have any voices it is all text. the other downside is that you don't have the choice to be either a girl or a guy. So other than those 2 negative parts the game is fabulous. It is in my humble opinion one of the best Monster Ranchers to date.
This game was pretty good overall. There were a couple things I didn't like about it, but, the good far outweighed the bad. The new training system offers a more entertaining way to train your monsters, while not being completely corny. The adventures are fun, though I wish you could use items to heal your monsters. The graphics could have been better, but they were good. I don't like the limited selection of monsters, however. There are only a few types to choose from.
Rating of the game:
Graphics: 8 Not the greatest, but good.
Game play: 9 Tecmo added more of an RPG element to Monster Rancher EVO while keeping the Monster raising the main point of the game.
Sound: 7 The sound quality is great, however the circus music can get on your nerves after awhile.
Controls: 10 The controls are easy enough to get used to.
Overall: 8 This game had some really good aspects but some could have been better.
Overall Opinion of the game: You should rent this game before buying it, it's kind of an acquired taste.
