What most players look for in a racer are a few simple things: a vast selection of tracks, eye popping graphics, great presentation, the ability to compete against other players via split screen or online, and in some cases, a varied set of items/weapons to use in races.
Monster High: Skulltimate Roller Maze is 0 for 5.
This game doesn’t have a great selection of tracks – there are only six tracks in the game (Wow, that’s one more than five).
The graphics aren’t good (even by Wii standards), and the music is dull, but yet very annoying. The Wiimote controls here are very bad – apparently, the game makers don’t know how to keep the skater going into a straight line, even with the Wiimote held completely level.
There’s not much of a real story or cut scenes in this game – it’s just about the Monster High Students racing against each other. When one race is over, it’s off to the next race (there is a short cut scene where the top three teams stand on a Olympian style podium and wave which I found bland).
The items in this game are just rip offs from other games in the genre (Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing, Mario Kart Wii). Worse is that most items you get just put a road hazard behind you, and they all do the same thing when the other player hits it.
But the thing that really hurts this game is the fact that you can’t play it split screen. No, in this game, you have to take turns: it’s only one player at a time versus the AI skaters.
Why? Why did they do this? Almost every other racing game (including the awful Data Design Interactive racers) lets 2-4 players go head to head against one another. It’s something I (and most other racing fans) look for in every racer since Mario Kart Wii – maybe even earlier.
Monster High: Skultimate Roller Maze is not fabulous, just downright awful. It’s my choice for one of the WORST GAMES FOR THE WII IN 2012.
