If you didn't have a ps2 at the time, and don't have a ps3 now; you should feel honored to play one of the best games that seemed light years ahead of its time when released (mgs2).
It had one of the most well written, crazy, epic, and quite horrifying stories that is relevant as ever today.
It is not afraid to delve into the sinister qualities of the human race, and how war has become nothing more than a business for profit and control. A tool used by an oligarchy to maintain power and influence. Soldiers, like weapons, nothing more than a commodity molded as seen fit, even genetically altered. There is even really long texts written very well in the title screen of mgs2 explaining the Shadow Moses incident from the first game.
Even though you may be on quite linear paths and close quarters a lot of the time, you still can't help but feel immersed in the story; that there's a whole world out there that's going to be affected greatly by the events on this day. You'll start to care for the characters, and the anti-metal gear organization Snake and Otacon are in. Most of the decision making and actions taken are explained well and justified (whether objectively or subjectively depending on the character).
The gameplay controls can be pretty weird on the xbox controller at first, but you'll get used to it; and once you do you'll realize how fun this game actually is, so many ways to go through each facility, including sneaking around in the good ol' trusty cardboard box lol. The game seems pretty much the same, but what's lame is there used to be more blood and better hit detection in the original (how did they downgrade from ps2?!)
Another great thing is there's easter eggs, jokes, and funny references everywhere especially when playing with the codec. something you don't really see much of anymore.
Add to all this mgs3 (a prequel in a russian wilderness environment!) and Peacewalker (have yet to play it).
Good example of oldschool COMPLETE games!
