Weak

A Divide in the Series

I knew right from the get go that this game wasn't going to be like other Metal Gear games. They told us when it was coming out it would be more of a fast paced, stealth action game and I came in with an open mind when renting this expecting to at least have a bit of fun. That didn't happen.

I tried real hard to like the game but at the end it just came out to be very repetitive. The first few tutorials only teach you how to mash square and triangle because in essence, that's all you have to do to play this game. Sure there are skills, there is a thing called "parrying" but it doesn't really teach you how to do these things. It just drops you in, assuming that your some impatient child who is so excited to mash two buttons over and over again. Thats my main problem with this game. They don't tell you how to play it, like they have no faith that you can even put together how to be a ninja. The best way to play this game is to just mash square and triangle and you'll get through any obstacle with an S rank.

The main selling point was to dazzle with graphics and let Raiden be the new Batman (his dark and brooding new voice) which doesn't even make sense because at least with Batman I feel like I'm thinking out each move I'm doing, using the right skill or utility at the right time to make an interesting combat scenario. Oh man, I almost threw up when I heard Raiden's theme song in this game, some auto-tuned, POS that instantly broke the illusion of playing a good game.

Also, Blade Mode was a cool concept to talk about on paper or see in tech demos but I found it to be very cumbersome to the game flow. You only get one change to use bullet time to deflect bullets out of the air or cut at just the right part before its rendered useless and silly. Again something that could have been improved on if maybe they just taught me how to play the game. I mean I know you learn by playing too but its just disenchanting to be that bad at a single player game for that long

This game was completely stunning, but short. I beat the game in 7 hours flat. There wasn't much of an ending either. So it left me wanting more out of the game. I hope the next one that comes out is a longer story and game.

Awesome story, Metal Gear series always has a great story and awesome cutscenes. That and it's character development I'd say are their strongest suits.

The gameplay is pretty fun, I prefer it over the stealth gameplay of the past Metal Gear solids. Pretty fun to slice your way through the game, and I beat the game in just under 4 hours, so it's a perfect rental.
