Master of the Monster Lair for Nintendo DS Reviews by Gamers

I changed my rating on this game from a 6 to an 8. I did this after considering its target audience.

This game is definitely aimed at younger players. An adult will soon grow weary of the repetitive gameplay and lack of consequences for failing in battle.

But I feel this would be an excellent game to get my son, were he 10 years old or so. The dialog is definitely written for his age. The mechanics of the game are simple, but diverse enough to present valid problem-solving situations. The room-placement mechanic alone seems to be an excellent exercise in planning and strategy.

I made it into the 5th level of my dungeon. By then, I could no longer look forward to the repetitive battles. Especially then, when some of my food choices required drops from level 1-3 monsters. I really couldn't bear going back and killing crows again.

But again, a nice problem-solving challenge for a younger player.

Adults, might be worth a rental if you are curious. But only purchase for your tweenager.

I find that this is a nice game and somewhat decent replacement of my favorite PC game. The story's not bad and the plot flows, even though it's often running into the same old foes that bogs it down. advancement is rather slow too, aside from the second playable character which gets stronger the more monsters you fight, but even that has its limits. Still, I'm enjoying putting down rooms and drawing monsters in. You definitely have to be of a mind to play this type of game to enjoy Master of the Monster Lair.
