I rented this game despite the not so good reviews and low overall expectations. The game play is ok I dont really like the top down view as the only camera angle it kinda takes the fun out of the game. I was only interested because you have the ability to play as these super heroes that I grew up with. All in all the cheesy angle doesnt really let you get into the action and it seems like you just go through the motions to finish the game. I would recommend the game to atleast rent if you like the super heroes and thats it. There is online capability but there was no one ever logged onto it.
Punch, kick, beat-'em-up ... punch, kick, beat-'em-up.... Wait, a superhero game that's more than just a button masher? Marvel: Ultimate Alliance continues the tasteful gameplay seen in such predecessors as X-Men Legends, making for one pretty fun superhero RPG. It's most impressive factor? The outrageous list of Marvel characters that Activision has managed to squeeze into this game. You'll run into about 140 Marvel faces, being able to use around 20 of them to make your own four-man dream team. And I have to say getting three other buddies for some on screen cooperative is one of the best non-online experiences on the PS3 ever. Making a four-man all star cast of Marvel heroes, and being able to upgrade each individually for more powers and stats, sounds pretty awesome. But this game does have some flaws that are painful to point out. Besides the enemies that all seem tediously similar every level, the online co-op is terrible. You'd better have a good internet connection, as well as your three other online buddies, because this game lags horribly. My entire experience online with Marvel consisted of my hero jumping in random directions I never even pointed with the controller. So when it comes down to it, four-player co-op with the four players ON THE SAME SYSTEM is one of the coolest things you can do on the PS3. The game online is horrible, and trying the game by yourself is just boring. If you got a lot of gamer friends living near you (which you probably do with that PS3)then Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is the game for you. If not, I might suggest renting this one. Maybe.
I your playing a smaller television forget about this game unless your playing by yourself. The game mechanics are actually pretty decent, but be aware I have had a couple problems just trying to jump in this game. The camera angles can be horrible for some fights. But you can't get over the fact it does have a strong storyline. Replay value is there, but don't expect it to be grand as most levels are so dark and the enemies hard to see, as they blend in with the scenery, you'll get very mad at the fact that is your friends quit on you, you have to quit the game to remove them from the party. But those minor things should not stop you from rent this game, it is worth playing and is quite fun and thats what its all about right...
