The improvements in Mario Kart are similar to existing sequels. 16 new courses with 16 courses from previous installments. There is a very nice graphical overhaul, colors are crisp and there is slightly more detail in the newer courses.

Biggest issue I have with the game is the AI/Multiplayer where blue shells still wreck havoc. The AI will relentlessly nail you with a blue shell or lighting bolt on the final lap. In MP matches most people farm an item and hang in the back until it's time to move in for first place on the last lap. It gets frustrating because there's no point in trying to take the lead as the item system punishes you for it.

There isn't much use of the 3D effect in the game, nothing really pops out at you outside of the win screen. The few new items they introduced are lackluster at best. The game really shines with the new courses and kart customization. If you are a fan of Mario Kart this is a must buy, if you never played Mario Kart before this is easily the best arcade racer you can buy.

3D graphics are so so but the gameplay is a blast and it has online world wide multiplayer via wifi. It's a great for casual gameplay which is what a 3DS is. This is one of those games worth owning for the online play. Only downside is the online play takes too long to start. You even have to watch someone else play until it's your turn.

I rented and played for a couple days. The graphics were good though I don't care about graphics. I didn't bother with the stupid 3D effect. The gameplay is okay. It's not bad besides a few problems. Errors in connections sometimes and the steering can be touchy. Plenty of times the stupid Circle Pad analog stick got stuck and I would drive off the edge even though I clearly moved it in attempt to turn. I wish I could use the dpad to turn and drive. Then there's the motion control when in 1st person view, you'll never want to use that EVER because it just sucks. Honestly why did they even put it in? There are a lot of maps / race tracks but some of them are from previous versions of Mario Kart. Which is okay and there fun to go back and race on now and then. The new maps and old maps have new features like air and under sea stuff which was neat but I don't think the content is there as a whole. I played for 3 nights with my friend and we got bored fast. Played all the maps. Battles weren't fun but that's because you cant choose the coin collecting one vs popping balloons, it's just random and if your like me and hate the coin one you'll have to play it in order to play battle. There's nothing wrong with the game but people need to stop saying it's the best. I wasn't that impressed. If this is the best then Nintendo 3DS is in trouble.

Now... Are there any DS/3DS games out there that have good multiplayer? I want something with substance, with content! I bought this handheld for Pokemon Black cuz I never had a DS and the last Pokemon I played was Red. While I am enjoying Black I need more than 1 game to justify the purchase. It looks like it's the only good game on the whole darn system! Seriously there are no good games and even fewer that feature WiFi Multiplayer! When are they making a Final Fantasy Tactics for 3DS? Will it have WiFi battles? Because A2 for the DS did not. I'm starting to wish I didn't waste $175 on this and just bought a used DS instead...

Mario Kart 7 is a great addition to the 3DS roster. The controls are tight, the graphics are clean, and it's plain old fun to play.

BEST MARIO KART 7 REVIEW

MARIO KART 7 is only on the 3ds wich is a disapointed because on the wii a few maps make a game.its pretty short but there is new things like choosing your wheels big or small choosing your new kite leaf or kite and choosing your kart cloud or train.each time you beat a map you unlock a map.beat all the maps you unlock your 3ds mii.you could play online wich i do alot because playing with other people makes a game and the mario kart 7's ai is too easy but i would beat the story so you could unlock karts, wheels, and kites.this game is a bummer for a potable game.i would rent this game for a day.MY GAMER TAG ON THE XBOX 360 IS ZOMBIEZ81

Mario Kart 7: Full-on Reverse

posted by Folklore (EL PASO, TX) May 3, 2013

I have played every Mario Kart game since the Nintendo 64 and have loved all of them. When I heard they were bringing out a new one I was excited, but that excitement turned into disappointment after playing for a while. I will mention some of the more minor annoyances before hitting the major ones.

The older games brought in a wide variety of characters that are well known from the Mario universe but this one brought the bottom of the barrel with Honey Queen, Wiggler, Metal Mario and Lakitu. There are better characters to bust out than these.

The only playable options for single players are the Grand Prix and Time Trial. You no longer have a free play option. I guess they don’t want you to replay this game.

The courses are way too easy to work with. Not much of a challenge or in length. Some are divided into sections not laps and Rainbow Road is one of them. To me Rainbow Road is supposed to be the ultimate trial. Long course with some difficulty. Not a short sweet walk in the park.

While those last two can be overlooked by some newer players, I am annoyed by them because of my past Mario Kart experiences.

Some major problems are as follows. The item distribution throughout the race is awful. The first two laps have the last place AIs getting items that belong to first of second place holders. Last lap hits and they bust out Bullet Bills, Lightning, and (what seems to be) a never ending supply of blue shells.

The idea of aerial parts is interesting but problematic. With some courses, such as Airship Fortress or Maple Treeway, there are parts where a cannon launched you and you are airborne. In the past games you had immunity or had someplace to land. Now a lightning strike hits and down you go and places you will lose.

All in all, the game is okay but it feels like they hit the brakes and went into reverse. Is it a keeper? No, only if you want to add to your Mario Kart Collection.
I give it a 6 out of 10.

The game is a good game you get to use your mii and everything and there's a new update for the online play, but you have to use your R button. Which brake over time and then you can't beat 150 CC or even 100 CC, that's why it still have's some flaws! IT IS STILL A GOOD GAME.

I thought this was gonna be a really boring, stupid, annoying game that i'd send back ASAP, however when I got it I had to leave the house and since it is a portable game I brought it with me and played it for hours and never got bored of throwing shells at other characters. how much fun. Such vibrant colors and the 3D looks amazing especially on the aquatic race tracks

Mario Kart does it again

posted by xrgamer (INDIO, CA) Oct 24, 2012

you would think that the same rehashed game would get boring after awhile but nintendo does it again. pros the game does have an active multiplayer community. the game also does add more custimization which can be earned in story and arcade mode. all your favorite game modes are back and you still have all your old game modes and all time favorites from the snes with reamped graphics and ofcourse new maps and tracks. another plus is that the game can now be updated in which nintendo blocks the wholes that hackers would use to cheat in a race. there is also a hint at dlc but the game doesnt feel like its missing anything it does use all 3ds features so you can use street pass with it. on the negative nintendo did add new things yet the postive of it being simmilar which is good is also a bad thing.

Mario Cart 7... The 7 is for rating and the age you should play it at. It wasn't that great, it's more for a 7 year old like I was saying. The 3D isn't that great. So I traded my 3DS in for a PS Vita. Way more satisfied with that. Hope this helps:)

Great Gameplay but Lacks in 3D Effects

posted by jjmesa16 (MESA, CO) Jul 11, 2012

The game overall is great and I find that I can't stop playing it even though I have already beaten the game. There is so much to do including race other players online, getting all of the vehicle upgrades, and beating all of the AI on the time trials. This game takes forever to fully complete and is fun the entire time. The one downside of this game is it does not have as great 3D effects compared to other games.

Great game, can be frustrating at times

posted by SoonerJay (OKLAHOMA CITY, OK) May 31, 2012

I have a love/hate relationship regarding the AI opponents in this game. On one hand, I like that the computer offers a challenge. Getting 1st or 2nd place every race is difficult and it may take certain customizations before you win 1st place in a particular cup. The frustrating part is when you get bombarded by several other characters. It always seems to happen when you're on the home stretch. You've raced a perfect race, and on the last leg of the final lap, you get attacked multiple times in a row. You lose your item, momentum, and coins. By the time you get back up to speed, several karts have whizzed past and you cross the finish line at 5th or 6th place.

The old stages look great, with a lot of the updates to the retro stages. There are several characters and customizations. While the game does provide a challenge, I don't think it went overboard like the Wii or GBA. The controls are tighter, and you could win most circuits without using items and by simply taking the quickest, most efficient route. (assuming you were fortunate enough to avoid turtle shells and lightning bolts.)

All in all, great game. Great graphics, great controls, plenty of content, and a high replay value. The best Mario Kart game I've played since Mario Kart 64.
