Mediocrity reigns supreme in this underwhelming handheld baseballer
Say what you will about the battle between the PSP and DS - Nintendo’s portable machine outsells Sony’s handheld by leaps and bounds, but the PSP owns the sports game space. The library of near-console-quality or better football, basketball, and baseball titles is impressive and continues to grow. Sadly, 2K Sports’ latest baseball offering for PSP doesn’t materially contribute to that list; it’s a decent outing, but looks worse every second when compared to its rival MLB 07: The Show.
Above: Don't get too thrilled - that's a next-gen shot. The PSP graphics are somewhat chunkier.
For all the fundamentals that 2K gets right, the overall experience you’ll have is slowly but surely undone by the sloppy presentation and too-numerous-to-count glitches and bugs that pop up all over the place. We totally dig the pitching mechanics, and the hitting via the Batter’s Eye is infinitely easier than on the game’s next-gen console cousins. However, a laundry list of hiccups keeps us from truly feeling the love.
The game struggles when moving from one scene to another. In the course of recording the final out of an inning, for example, chances are you’ll see the batter who just struck out remain at the plate awaiting the next pitch that will never come as the rest of the players walk right off the field. During this strange transition, the commentary from Jon Miller and Joe Morgan will likely cut off mid-sentence, made worse by the fact that they were probably about three seconds behind the action in the first place.
