Bad

Potential Completely Unreached

When i first heard about this game I was really excited. I thought the idea behind the game seemed pretty cool and some of the gameplay ideas were exciting. However, this game fails to reach up to its potential. The tutorial is lacking in any information on how the game actually works, so for most of the game you are wondering why a healer character can't heal or what your various attributes mean. I can not stress enough how annoying it is to not understand the rules while you are trying to play a game. The story seems weak with cliched dialouge and every character having the same speech for the same event. It would not have been that hard to simply have different dialouge if you had chosen a different main character but the game designers were too lazy to do even that. Or if they did actually change it the dialouge and story was so uncompelling I didn't even notice. On the plus side the exact route mapping is pretty nice, (even though it has problems when you don't know the rules) and I liked the full 360 directional control and the feeling that it gave you during the battle. Maybe if I played the tabletop game and understood the rules I could have enjoyed this but otherwise I would strongly advise against renting this game.

Weak

Rather cluttered for a DS game

I had some outside hopes for this game, seeing that I am always for a good strategy game. I have never played the actual Mage Knight game, though I am versed enough to get the gist of the game itself.

That being said, the game tries too much to be Mage Knight instead of being a video game itself. Sure, it was nice to watch the cutscenes, but the actual gameplay is less than thrilling, almost downright intimidating. I couldn't get anything to work right for the first 30 minutes and then once I started to get a LITTLE bit of a hint, it was boring and I was over it.

People who are REALLY into Mage Knight will love this, others will not find a gateway into its exclusive world.
