Madden '07 is the only NFL game available since EA got the exclusive and the fiercely competitive NFL 2K (ESPN) series was hung out to dry. That's unfortunate becuase everyone is forced to play Madden or nothing at all...I'll take nothing at all. This is an objective review of the good, the bad, and the ugly...no religious devotion to an inferior product here.
Madden '07 gameplay is good and has, over time, incorporated the breakthroughs in game play and format that the 2K series pioneered.
Madden '07 does not force players to use the ill-conceived QB vision of Madden '06. This is a redundant feature becuase players already have rankings in awareness and poise when not using the QB vision. Plus, having a yellow cone on the plkaying field is downright silly.
The play-by-play during gameplay is several years of audio clips collaged together, and it sounds like it. The lines have noticeable differences in the audio quality and presentation so it becomes a Frankenstein's monster of audio clips.
The play book has plays the size of postage stamps so reading a play and having any clue of what the players are going to do requires the use of a telescope. This was a horrible design flaw incorporated into the game, and furthermore shows the lazy approach EA has in treating Madden as a mere product instead of a quality gaming experience like Sega has done with its 2K series.
The graphics engine needs to be completely redesigned becuase it is comparable to that of the Sega Dreamcast console from so many years ago. Actually, Sega's ESPN football still has much better cut scenes and incorporation of the NFL stadium and media coverage aspects than Madden '07 which is being produced some 2 years afterwards. There has been no attempt whatsoever to make Madden into a next-gen console game.
This lack of desire to deliver anything more than a product by EA games can be seen in clear comparison if you play EA's NBA Live '07 and Sega's NBA 2K7.
