A lion, a zebra, a giraffe and a hippo join the circus to avoid getting caught by the long arm of the law, only to find that the circus is a flop.
In order to put in new life into the great show, the player has to gather up several items for Skipper, the head penguin.
That’s what you’ll be doing most of the time in Madagascar 3, the video game. You search through parts of four cities to get to and retrieve a certain item for Skipper (an umbrella, a statue, and so on.) You also might have to gather up items for King Julian (like pizza or tea)
There are other types of levels where you gather up things lying about the area, put up posters, free captive animals, avoid the main bad lady, or play a few mini games in a circus type atmosphere – but you’ll mostly be searching and gathering items.
Along the way, you use special abilities that each of the four main characters has: the lion can double jump, the hippo and giraffe can walk on tight ropes, and the zebra can run along ramps to leap great distances. You (and possibly one other player) team up to get through the obstacles.
But the problem is that the levels don’t vary at all – you do the same tricks and abilities over and over again. If you’re bored by the time you get to the end of the first city, then you should bail out – the other cities play out exactly the same as the first.
But this game might entice kids who like the movie and who like the idea of exploring and finding odd items that are laid out all over the playing area.
Madagascar 3 has some fun to it, but I would like to see more inventive level design and better objectives for those levels. RENT IT.
