Gameplay Controls

MLB 2005

GamePlay:

BATTING CONTROLS:

The game has three difficulty levels: Rookie, Veteran and All-Star. Each level has different batting controls:

Rookie Mode Batting: In rookie mode, timing is everything, and will determine where and how hard you hit the ball. Alter the timing of your swing depending on the pitch location to hit the ball where you want.
Veteran Mode Batting: In this mode, timing and swing location are critical. Time your swing properly, and use the Left Analog Stick to direct your swing to the location the ball is pitched to for optimal batting. Also in this mode, if you can guess the pitch type as well, you will get a double power boost.
All-Star Mode Batting: You will only be succesful if you can guess the pitch locations and make good swings, as well as guessing the pitch types. Also, the difficulty is increased by the fact that you can only cover 3 of the 9 hitting zones, so guess wisely or miss!

Guessing Pitch Types: To guess the pitch type, during a pitch hold R2 to freeze the action and bring up the "Pitch History/Location Box". Press X, Square, Triangle, Circle, L1 or R1 to guess that pitch type. The controller will vibrate to confirm your selection.

PITCHING CONTROLS:

Changing Pitch Speeds: Change the speed of your pitch based on how long you hold down the X Button. Holding X for the duration of the pitch gives you maximum power. Trying to throw heat on every single pitch will rapidly decrease your pitchers stamina.
Locating Your Pitches: Once you choose a Pitch Type, choose the pitch location. Before each pitch is thrown, the batter's cold and hot zones are visible (Red is hot, Blue is cold, Clear is neutral). Once a pitch type is selected, you will see the batter's strike zone and a ball cursor. Use the Left Analog Stick to change the location of the ball cursor. After the cursor fades away, you can still adjust the pitch location without the indicator. The farther you move the location away from the center of the strike zone, the harder the controller will vibrate.
Visiting the Mound: Your pitcher's stamina and abilities are closely linked. If your pitcher's speed or accuracy is getting worse, try to calm him down and increase his stamina with a trip to the mound. To do this, press Start to bring up the Pause Menu, select "Mound Visit" from the menu, then press X Button.

DEFENSIVE FIELDING HELP:

As the ball travels toward you in the field, the Fielding Aid (which looks like a large white and red baseball on the ground) will appear to target the landing spot. Position your fielder on top of the Fielding Aid to make sure you catch the ball. The Fielding Marker will light up under your player when you have caught or fielded the ball.

VOICE RECOGNITION CONTROLS

Voice Recognition (VR) will only work in one-player gameplay modes. It will work only for the user with a controller plugged into Controller Port 1. It is always activated and does not need to be turned on. To use it, press and hold R3, while saying the exact command. when you press and hold R3, a YELLOW VR icon will appear at the left of the screen. It will remain there until you release it. When the computer accepts a command, the VR icon will flash GREEN as it fades away. If the computer does not understand the command, the VR icon will flash RED as it fades away.
