This year's installment of RTTS was very similar to last year's version with a little cosmetic work done but no major changes. This is still the best baseball game out there but it has room for improvement. One thing that caused me to package up the game and send it straight back was the fact that the better your player gets stats wise, the worse he plays in the games. I played with a pitcher all based on velocity and control. He has a sub 1.00 era through his first year and a half with 8 complete game shutouts and a sub .5 WHIP, this was all while his abilities were not very good. Now for some reason once he became an overall B, everything went to hades. for 6 straight games he allowed 2+ HRs a game.... when he had never allowed one before. Teams would basically tee off from the first inning on. He became an average pitcher over night for no reason. He used to get around 4 Runs of Run support per game and then when this time hit, the team averaged 1 run per game thus the pitcher lost 6 straight games. He would give up home runs to people who had no business in a home run derby like Khalil Green and Jimmy Rollins.... I find that this game is good but does not need to raise the AI to outstanding once you hit a certain point of your career. Another thing that I did not enjoy was the system of advancement goals, when playing as a SS for the Cubs (very much in need of a SS) I would hit every goal and for a year and a half stayed in AA... an ADVANCEMENT goal is a goal that if you hit, you should advance in some way... this made no sense to me how every time an advancement period ended, I would get an email that said "your just not ready yet".... if they want people to continue to play this game, they need to make advancement goals that are harder to meet and take longer periods of time to accomplish, 3 series and no promotion is like peeing your pants in the dark, you get that warm feeling but no one cares.
The most realistic baseball game ever? You bet. Sony had given us a sports sim that will wow the pants of you. Customization options galore. You get all the MLB teams, stadiums, players, etc. The batting and pitching systems have been given an overhaul and made more user friendly. Ditto to the fielding and base running functions. The player models are large and very detailed as is the stadiums and sound effects. Pitches are easy to execute and each pitcher has a standard set of pitches along with 1 or 2 unique pitches. The batting is easier than ever with 1 button to bat, 1 button for a power swing, and one for bunting. The feedback options help you guess which pitch may be coming at you and the batting feedback tells you if you've swung to early or to late. As the pitching/batting is super realistic, this tool is invaluable. Great commentary tracks that doesn't get to repetitive and some great multi-player/online options. This is the sports game to get. I really don't see how it can be further improved on for next year. A truly enjoyable sports game.
