Games don't just receive 10's off the street. They need passionate developers, beautifully woven storylines, amazing characters, unforgettable gameplay, and timeless appeal. Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker has it in spades.
STORY:
The game's childish graphics work wonderfully. Though they may have seemed weird at first, they actually end up working incredibly well. They are a representation of a child's point of view and it is a great approach to all the challenges Link will face involving legends from long ago (which will seem strangely familiar to those who played Ocarina of Time.) The story is amazing, and how could it not be, Shigeru Miyamoto is at the wheel.
GAMEPLAY:
This is the classic Zelda that you know and love. Mind-bending puzzles, clever boss fights, expertly hidden items, breathtaking dungeons, it's all here. Not to mention, it truly pulls out all the stops, using the Gamecube to it's fullest potential. To get from place to place, you ride a boat across the open seas, but the amazing thing about it is that you are truly in full-control of the boat, not just selecting your destination and watching a cutscene. Also, it cleverly uses the GCN-GBA link cable by allowing you to call upon Tingle (remember him, anyone) to get you out of tight situations in dungeons or to help you reach special items that can only be reached through the Tingle Tuner (your GBA).
LASTING APPEAL:
This game could easily last 150+ hours, thanks to an amazing main quest (which would take even the most experienced gamer at least 40 hours), which isn't even including the thousands of side quests. Not to mention, once you've spent all of that time with it, you can playthrough the second quest, which is a re-imagining of the main quest, and then, you can do the second quest's thousand of side-missions. It never ends!!!
In the end, the Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker is another legend in a legendary series. It is the absolute best RPG on the gamecube!
Overall: 10/10
