Legend of Heroes II: Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch for PSP Reviews by Gamers

Ok, you've probably only heard about this game if you've played the first one, Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermilion. Keep in mind there really aren't any great RPGs for PSP, but this one is good. Standard setup for RPG, you start with one character that is strong in hand-to-hand combat, and another that is a healer. You lose and gain characters as the game progresses, but this doesn't happen as often as in the last game. Also, the new characters are fairly strong so you don't have to level them up, also an improvement from LoH:ToV. The elemental attack cinematics are also much improved from the last game. Overall, this is nice sequel, and if you've played the first one, you know what to expect: a simple, turn-based, elemental-based RPG that will make hours fly by.

Visuals aside, this game is nothing great--or even good. The dialog and storyline reminded me of an old-school RPG on the NES--a really bad one. The battle system was also lacking a great deal.

GAMEPLAY: 2
The gameplay was really bad--fairly reminiscent of the original Final Fantasy on the NES. Usually when a game's storyline is lacking, I can still have fun power-leveling; however, that was not the case this time.

Battles pit the characters into an open-ended area where each character has to move within range of its target in order to attack it, except there is no real move command. If someone is out of range for a spell, you can't move there and then cast--you're just simply out of luck. Moreover, each attack sends the target flying backwards, so if you order more than one character to attack the same monster then it'll be pushed out of range and the second character will just walk up and do nothing.

GRAPHICS: 7
The terrain is beautiful, but the characters are lacking. They seem somewhat out-of-place in the world. It's almost like playing old pixelated 2D characters inside a near-3D world.

SOUND: 5
I don't recall anything terribly good or bad about the sound effects.

PLOT: 3
The dialog was atrocious, and the storyline was nothing special. Its only saving grace was that it didn't mention "destiny" all over your place--your simply a young boy (and girl) on a quest to enter adulthood like everyone else in your village has done for generations.

I really can't think of a single reason to want to play this game. I've never played the first one, but it seems to be the consensus that this one offers nothing new. The fact that this prequel is labeled as a sequel should be a testament to just how bad this game is.
