Would Have Been Perfect....

First I'll just say that I would have given this game a perfect score if it weren't for one thing. The leveling system. This game would have been perfect for me if they had just kept the typical rpg leveling system I have come to love where you fight, gain exp, and level up. In this game it's pretty much the exact opposite. The more you fight the weaker your party will get, which it just dumb.

In this game your only experience bar is your party's bravery level which increases as you fight more battles. You would probably think this would make your guys stronger but it doesn't. The trick to this game is to keep your bravery as low as possible by fighting as little as possible in order to boost your stats by fighting stronger opponents. Sadly, myself like many other people found this out the hard way when we got half way through the game and were getting wiped out with one attack.

I simply don't think this works for a rpg game because it forces you to avoid some pretty cool monster fights in order to keep your party up to par with the enemies. Also, it prevents you from trying to capture monsters, or collecting components to upgrade weapons because these activities would require you to fight more. Considering the awesome battle system, they should have come up with a leveling system that makes you want to fight more.

If it wasn't for this leveling system I would give this game a 10. Everything else in this game, especially the battle system, I loved.

The Last Remnant provides an interesting twist in the classic RPG formula with the introduction of the Union system. Last Remnant's Unions take the place in battle of a standard PC in other games. Unions are made up of individual units and provide the player with a great deal of flexibility in designing their combat. Unfortunately, this degree of flexibility is offset by a lack of choice in battle. To counteract the tedium of having to select individual commands for the up to 15 different units in a battle, the Last Remnant allows the player to enter general instructions such as "Finish them off" or "Get your HP up" that each unit in a union can interpret differently. While this wouldn't be a problem in and of itself, the game seems to randomly generate what type of instructions are available each round. Often times when one specific instruction would guarantee victory, it simply won't be available. You'll be forced to choose from less desirable options that may even leave your units waiting to act.

There's not too much going for story-line and immersion for this. And the graphics are pretty lack-luster with VERY frequent pop-in and long load times.

All of that is very easy to get by once you get into the battle system. They start you out in the game with a taste of what battles will be like, but it doesn't feel as good because it's not YOUR team. After a couple hours of gameplay, your options are broadened to the composition of your units and it makes fights freakin sweet. If you enjoy turn-based RPGs at all, this game is a MUST, the battle system will truly blow you away. To me, it outweighs the cons.

Give it a try.
