Good

Pretty Good

I picked up this game because reading some of the user reviews claimed it was a confusing game, so I wanted to check it our for myself. So is it really all that hard to figure out? Well no, not really.

Now let's get one thing straight, this is not a game you can just jump right into and figure out on your own. You WILL need to watch the tutorial videos provided first to get a basic understanding of the game, and even then it will likely take a few rounds to get a better grasp on how it all works in motion.

The gameplay is like a combination of a tactical RPG like FF Tactics with pseudo real time combat mixed with a dash of shmup mixed in. In order to attack you have to drag a weapon from a sidebar to the appropriate class on the board and hold it over them, this causes a clock to count down as the weapon charges up and you release when a monster moves into range. Enemies can only attack your cursor requiring you to dodge their various attacks with your stylus or lose time. The strategy of the game comes from spending that time wisely, choosing weapons with the right range, and managing inventory.

It is a complex game if you want master every little nuance, and while it is a game you kinda need to play for yourself to really understand once you do it's actually not that complex. To be honest I found very repetitive. The story is pretty dull so its good they let you skip the many cutscenes between battles. I didn't more than a about a half dozen maps into it before getting tired.

Overall it is much more complex than most games out these days and not in a bad way. It certainly has a unique gameplay design and I can see why some people love it while others hate it. If like me your curiosity was piqued then definitely give it a shot.

Fantastic Game

This game is not for the faint of heart or mind.

That being said, it's a wholly original gamestyle that is completely worth learning and playing. The story is a bit on the japanese side, but many gamers enjoy that these days, so it's not a negative experience. The story isn't the real reason to play the game though

The game is.

This game fuses tactics roleplaying game style with shooter dodging and includes ways to micromanage your players and inventories to make for a completely different gaming and strategizing styles than I have ever seen before. It -does- have a several hour learning curve, and really learning your character class styles is necessary for a fully immersive experience.

But for those people who haven't seen something new from the gaming world in years:

This is what you've been waiting for.

Excellent

A Masterpiece; Worth the Effort

I do not have to go into the details of the game here, as they have been described in other reviews, but count me in as a believer in this game!

When you first approach the game, do not just start a new game and jump in. First, you need to read each "First Steps" and "Tutorial" section by selecting "Teaching" at the start menu. You will seriously not know what to do if you jump right in. Even better, go to the official Knights in the Nightmare page at (atlus website slash knights) to view the four company-supplied tutorial videos.

It's a lot of work to get into this game, but it is worth the effort. The way the story is told is unique, the art style is amazing, and the soundtrack, while small, is phenomenally written. Once you get the system down, you separate tactics from the "bullet h---" action - all tactics are done when you set up the map, and the action takes place during the actual battle, representing DoDonPachi much more than Ogre Battle.

Good luck to you when this arrives in the mail. If you put forth the work, you will be hooked on this game until it's all over.
