Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes is the kind of game you either like or you don't. I'm in the latter group. KUF tries to pass itself off as an RTS, but also wants to be hack-n-slasher. Unfortunately, it does neither very well. The story basically revolves around a bunch of people being angry at some other people and working out their mommy issues with swords. There's some half-vampires and ogres too and they like to fight just as much. The RTS portion of this game mostly consists of taking a few groups of troops, moving your cursor to a chosen location and giving them one of three choices: hold, move and move all. Some special moves are activated using the D-pad and that makes up the bulk of the strategy. Eventually your troops will engage enemies. This is where the hacking action comes in, but even that feels stripped down. It pretty much boils down to moving your hero around and hitting the X button over and over again. You could try an overhead attack, but it's often too slow to hit your enemy and while you can block, you're surrounded by enemies, so that becomes pointless. You do have special moves activated with the Y button, but their effectiveness is debatable. Really won't matter since the campaigns are frustrating ("Oh, you want me to take on this endless legion of ogres with some archers and infantry units while protecting defenseless caravans and leading them to an unknown destination? Piece of cake!") I was going to give this game a lower score, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. Maybe if I had spent more time with it, I'd see the deeper levels of gameplay it very-well might hold. Problem is it didn't hold my interest long enough for me to care. And that's really what matters.
