King of Fighters series boosted their franchise this time.
Their beautiful sprites and delicate combos make KoF 13 one of the best fighting games of this year.
This game, however, is not the most welcoming to newcomers. This game requires a vast knowledge of the each characters and the game as whole. Furthermore, the game is nearly impossible to master, but it is possible to be good at. I've been playing KoF since 96. I still mess up some of the combos.
I miss some characters such as Chris, Iori, angel, etc. but this game offers many new characters and the old version of Iori can be bought as DLC.
One part of the game I dislike is the juggling system. I like KoF for its non-combo-based skills magically connecting one after another to form a deadly combo. However, on the KoF 13, epecially Shen, there are too many characters with too obviously placed attacks for juggling. I maybe getting fond of older games. Just call me fighting game hipster and ignore this part.
The special moves look beautiful and Max/Neo Max special moves are actually usable through many combos.
The game overall is fantastic. It is very difficult but the reward from completing a combo and beating an enemy with thin line of health is incomparable to any other fighting games.
