I have never seen American Idol, so I can't speak to how similar it is to the show. That said, it is a great karaoke game. I enjoy singing, and it was easy to read the lines of music.
Personally, I thought the song choices were excellent. Most of them are songs I grew up singing, which made it all the more fun. The awards and unlockable content make it enjoyable as well. There is an "American Idol" mode that lets you choose between 3 contest lengths, and eliminates contestants after each round. If you only want to sing and not worry about judging, there is also a karaoke mode, which my 8-year-old son had lots of fun trying out.
The other karaoke-style game I have tried was the Singstar series. In comparison, this game has the following advantages: Unlockable content (keeps the game more fresh), characters to change and the option of using the EyeToy (Singstar shows you the music video, which is cool, but it never changes), a much more easy-to-read format for following the lines of music, and a greater number of songs.
This game also uses a standard USB microphone, instead of requiring the specific one that comes with the game.
Pros: Great song choices, easy-to-read song line, different game modes, unlocking features
Cons: Sometimes the lyrics are zipping by too fast to read easily. Also, as with any game of this style, eventually you get tired of singing the same songs.
