Swoff (Jake Gyllenhall) is a third-generation military man who's enlisted in the Marines. Jarhead follows Swoff through boot camp and into the disorienting world of the Gulf War. There, he roams through the desert, a sniper rifle in hand and a hundred pounds of gear on his back. There's little shelter from the scorching desert sun or an elusive Iraqi enemy. Swoff and his mates, including his mentor/friend Troy (Peter Sarsgaard) and squad leader/Marine lifer Sergeant Sikes (Jamie Foxx), have refined the art of dark humor as a survival skill, trying to make sense of an over-arching mission that seems hard to fully grasp.
