I rated this fairly high because I thought I would rate it from a casual or beginning gamers perspective. It is a fun game if you are not into serious gaming. The story line was fun and didn't mimic the movie incredibly, but it had some of the main components. It gave a fair amount of choice and it was possible to explore to some extent.
For the expert gamer it was more like a 2 or 3. The scenic aspect was alright from the ground but a lot of things looked flat from above. I thought the concept of the design was stellar but the programming needed some work. I didn't run into any glitches really, and the game was somewhat easy to get through.
First let me get to the campaign. It is very interesting, more in depth and organized than most video games based of movies but there is the catch. It is a prelude to the movie Avatar but it is still good. You arrive in a base on the planet Pandora and you are told by a woman in the ship ride down not to goof off and you are then dropped down and another woman gives you a quest I won't go any further in the story I don't want to spoil it.
On to gameplay. It is something you normally don't see, a open world shooter. You CAN play the campaign and get upgrades and take part in massive battles. Even in that you can wonder around drive almost all vehicles and even use teleporter machines to teleport to unlocked parts of the world with these machines you can also play a mini game which reminded me of risk. You can unlock flame throwers assault rifles, and more by completing objectives. But that was only marines Nav'i the alien race is also playable. Playing as them the wolf like creatures and plants won't attack you. You get a club bow and different out fits you also can unlock on marines but these aren't just for show. Out fits have their own stats like mobility, protection ect.
Graphics are average and at some points I mean most points way above average. The characters you can choose from look pretty good.
After you beat the game you can still explore the planet drive and pilot vehicles and battle wild life without the nav'i rudely interrupting you in the middle of the wild fire you started with your flame thrower. AI is pretty smart they actually do damage to enemies but also take damage I like to go into big fights to kill a giant hammer head buffalo deep in the jungle. Your Character has a big back story you can read and so do all the other characters. You can kill certain plants and get dna samples to revive I only talked about humans the navi are cool too! don't let the fact its not totally based on the movie discourage you.
