Disappointing after Heavy Rain

I enjoyed Heavy Rain a lot, and many reviews of that game referenced Indigo Prophecy, so I decided to check it out. It was decent, but I had a hard time getting into it like I did HR. I don't know if it was the going back in time to PS2 graphics that was a hindrance, or that the interface was poorer, or that the story was just less interesting to me. So let me touch on those three things specifically.

I don't want to trash a game for being "older", but it has the same feel as watching a SD TV program on a large HD screen. If you have a hard time overcoming the bland blocky 3D graphics of that era, then maybe you might skip this title.

I hated the controls after playing HR. At least with HR, the stick movements seemed to relate to the moment you were in and the corresponding character action. With this game, you were constantly playing analog stick ping pong just to progress the story. I hated the color coded "Simon" that was superimposed on the screen telling you what to press next. It really detracted from the game, as I had to focus on the movements I had to repeat, not the actual onscreen action. There were times I honestly couldn't follow the story because I had to focus on the rapid "Simon" pattern that I had to repeat. And the patterns often had nothing to do with the movements of the character.

The story was...well, meh. I love a good, interesting story game, especially those that explore alternative understandings of history. But this one just kind of felt forced. Certainly not like Broken Sword or other similar games. One annoyance, without giving away any spoilers, was the introduction of new faction in the last couple of chapters without any real explanation or semblance of story continuity. Its like how some mystery writers ruin a book where you are following things, piecing it together and then the writer decides to really trick it up by making the chamber maid (who is never ever mentioned previously until the last chapter) do it. Wha??!

Would be a perfect TEN but the ending was a little too cheesy for me. No, I will not spoil it but overall the storyline and dialogue, graphics and even the score was superbly done. The controls were a little iffy at times but those that love playing Heavy Rain for the PS3 will love Indigo Prohecy. It's CSI meets Sci-fi in this thriller of a game. Commit murder, go on the lam and eventually save the world with the occasional love making scene too. Enjoy it but be warned. I know this game has multiple endings mine was just too cheesy, play for yourself to find out what YOUR ending will be.

A truly cinematic game with a compelling story, addictive gameplay, and endearing characters. It's kind of like a point-and-click adventure without the point-and-click; that is, you advance the story by talking to people and examining your surroundings, and all action sequences are conducted via rhythmic button-mashing. Don't be put off by this, though. It's all handled very well. The camera and the controls could certainly use some work, and there's one particular plot point late in the game that seems downright contrived, but apart from that, "Indigo Prophecy" is quite a unique and enjoyable experience. If you like games with a focus on story, mystery, plot twists, and character development, then I recommend it highly.
