IGN Review of Incredible Hulk
The Incredible Hulk lacks any sort of gameplay creativity: the character's pretty brainless, so I guess it made sense to the designers to make the Nintendo DS just as brainless. The DS title has a bit of charm in a simplistic sort of way, but it's hard to shake the feeling that the game was made by a team that wasn't interested in doing anything but a mediocre and straightforward experience.
Don't look for any insight on the Incredible Hulk as a character, what makes him tick, why he's pissed off, how come he's green, or the umpteen other questions you might have if you don't read the comics or haven't seen the summer flick. The Nintendo DS doesn't put any effort into presenting the story at all: a brief full-motion video of a snow-covered mountain and you're whisked off into the first level, a snowy Alaskan environment where you simply work your way through a side-scrolling series of levels beating up on enemies shooting at you. Who are these guys and why are they shooting at you? And what are you doing in Alaska, anyway?
It doesn't matter, really…the game's straightforward design simply challenges you to survive all the way to the end of each level by kicking and punching anything that gets in your way. You can super jump up high if you tap the shoulder button first, and if you smash at the environment you'll build up a meter which will unleash a rage attack. Oh, and you move onto the next level when you destroy a giant satellite at the end. Apparently giant satellites are bad.
And then for the next nine levels you continue through the wintery environments of Alaska, eventually beating up on the Abomidable Snowman (I'm not kidding) and then a robotic fish in interim boss battles. After that, the screen fades to black with a "Five Years Later" and you're suddenly in Brazil. What the…how the hell did I get from Alaska to South America, and why?
It all just feels so darn lazy. While The Incredible Hulk has some cool elements like fully destructable environments and decent collision detection, levels feel thrown together with very little flair to them, as if a bunch of interns slapped some structures together in a public domain game creator. And apparently the designers forgot to turn off the tutorial icons – it's nice to get a head's up on a special move early in the game, but you know, I don't need to read about that same move fifteen levels later. Guys, I've been playing the game for two hours, I know that you can do an uppercut by pushing up and punch, thanks.
At least there's some cool payoff for working your way through the levels: the Nintendo DS version features 20 unlockable skins for The Hulk, so if you're a Hulk Junkie you'll probably get a kick out of all the little nods to the comic in the portable version.
