The GC has had some great titles that return to old classic gaming genres (like Viewtiful Joe). Ikaruga isn't for everyone; this is a game-afficionado's game. Like the difference between pop-music and music for musicians, Ikaruga is not for casual gamers.
That said, those who've followed gaming from early arcade masterpieces like Tempest, Centipede, and so forth, should find much here to love. The 2D scrolling shooter has had a continued niche presence throughout the history of gaming, but this is one of the strongest home console titles to come along in a long time. The last time I felt this compelled by the genre was with Blazing Lasers (on TG16).
Perhaps the best part about Ikaruga (other than the amazing gameplay and graphics) is that it attempts to convey the feeling of an old stand-up arcade game, rather than trying to "translate" a shooter to console-style gaming. This game also grows over time, so a quick one-day try at it won't convince you of its greatness. Give it a week or two of solid play-time.
