I missed getting to play these two titles when they were originally on the PS2, and all I ever heard was how great they are. And visually, yes, they are awesome looking games. However, everything else about them is horrible. Bad controls. Horrific camera. And as for the story, most of the time, I had no idea what was going on.
I'll start with Ico. You play some kid with horns that gets locked in some castle. Why? No idea. The game doesn't explain. It was later explained to me by a friend that it's because he has horns... Um, okay. I guess that makes sense. Anyways, you try to leave and run into a girl that is prisoner in the castle. Why? No idea. She doesn't have horns. The game has no real dialogue to explain these things. The object of the game is to escape with the girl. Simple, yes, but a tried and true gameplay idea. The problem is the girl is so incompetent that she can't even walk without you holding her hand. And if you leave her for more than a few seconds to solve some puzzle, shadow monsters come out and drag her away while she just screams for help, offering no resistance at all. After an hour of this, I gave up on the game and moved onto...
Shadow of the Colossus. Once again, I had no idea what was going on. Some girl was dead? Asleep? And you go off and kill giants because of it. Thankfully, this time I didn't have to escort someone that was dumber than dirt. Instead, I had to deal with a hugely annoying camera and controls that made it very difficult to play. I gave up around the fifth giant monster.
Like I said, I have no idea why these games are so loved by so many people. They're some of the worst I have ever played, and I've played a lot of bad games. And everyone keeps waiting for the developers next game, The Last Guardian, which has been delayed many times. Based on these two games, I hope it never comes out.
