IGN Preview of Harvest Moon: Tale of Two Towns
Fans of the 15-year-old Harvest Moon franchise were no doubt excited when they heard the announcement for Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns for the 3DS. This title, coming out sometime this year, will mark the first time players will get an opportunity to play this popular sim in full stereoscopic 3D.
While the game is still fairly early on in the development process, I've gotten the chance to spend some time with a very, very early build of the game. The premise of it is similar to past Harvest Moon titles, as players work hard to maintain a farm, raise crops, take care of livestock, and befriend their fellow villagers.
As the name suggests, however, this time you have the choice of two villages to live in, Konohana or Bluebell. While these towns used to be on friendly terms, they're now in an all-out competition for the title of best food in the world. It's your job to produce the highest quality ingredients you can and prepare a dish that proves once and for all that your town is the best. Silly? Perhaps. But it's a fun premise and adds a little extra incentive to make your town the best it can be.
In Tale of Two Towns, you can play as either a boy or a girl, and whatever village you choose to live in informs the kind of activities you'll be doing. Kokohana has a large emphasis on farming, while animal lovers will probably want to set up house in the ranching town of Bluebell. The ultimate goal is to bring the two towns together once again, as you compete in festivals and build your home along the way.
As mentioned, the build I've been playing is incredibly early, but from what I've seen this looks like a promising title that fans of the series should be looking forward too. The graphics are charming, the character designs are endearing, and there's something quite soothing about tending to your town and trying your best to make the best soup ever.
While this type of "set your own pace" gameplay is certainly not for everyone, Tale of Two Towns looks like it should be a fun new entry in the franchise. The preview build I got still has a long way to go before it's complete, but this small glimpse I've had has me excited to see the finished product and show the world why my town is the best.
