IGN Review of Hannah Montana: The Movie
Hannah Montana has seen multiple Nintendo DS games in the past few years and all of them have been completely different. First it was a point and click sprite adventure game. Then it was an innovative and interesting music game. And now it's Hannah Montana: The Movie. It's less of an adventure than the first game, and less of a music game than the second.
Since anyone that gives a damn about Hannah Montana has already seen the movie, I'll just say that the game follows the plot of the film. Only it simplifies it to the point of taking about anything even remotely interesting about the movie.
Most of the game involves walking through the plot of film, doing the bare minimum in interactivity. Fetch quests and minigames are the most complex thing in the game, and players are lucky to do that. There are literally moments of the game where Hannah simply walks between two rooms, relaying conversations like a carrier pigeon.
The controls are clunky, and Hannah is slow, which makes the simple and boring tasks of talking to people more tedious. This is an adventure game with no adventure. The game is so linear that there is nothing to figure out. The game tells the player who to talk to, then exactly where to go.
Occasionally during the game Miley will imagine Hannah performing in a certain venue and the game will switch to concert mode. Instead of making a rhythm game, the obvious and cliche choice, the developers did something different. Players continue to control Hannah, strutting about the stage while the song plays. Around the stage are six areas: microphone, guitar, keyboard, drums, dancing and a special section. Players walk to the areas and activate them, jumping into a touch screen microgame, mimicking playing the instrument.
It would have been preferable to take the obvious rhythm game choice here, because these concert stages are a joke. None of the sections are any fun to play, and they don't even match the music. The keyboard, drums and guitar play over the song, and it just adds a cacophony to everything.
The concert venues do have the benefit of not looking terrible. There's some nice effects like a video screen going through Hannah Montana photos and all the various stages are fairly well detailed. That's true for most of the environments, though the character models are too nondescript to really tell apart. Hannah, her best friend Lily, and her brother dressed in drag look exactly the same.
