A New Game Play Type Falls a Little Flat

Gravity Rush is an interesting game. Play as a girl who can control gravity and uses it along with a series of kicks to fight weird creatures. The concept is interesting, and can draw you in. However, the game play needs some major tweaking to become a memorable title.

First off, the story. Your character wakes up in the middle of an alley. She has no memory of who she is or how she got there. All she finds is a weird cat that sticks by her wherever she goes. She soon discovers that with the help of the cat, she can control her center of gravity. Allowing her to stand on any surface. She can also use her gravity shifting powers to fly through the air (just not stylishly). She uses these powers to fight the creatures randomly spawning in the city, called Nevi. In some ways, the story is disappointing. This girl wakes up with no memories. This doesn't create an air of mystery, but instead seems more like an excuse not to go into her background. Which is disappointing, considering you would like to know how she came to be.

Graphics are basically a cartoon character against a virtual background, similar to Borderlands. They're done well, but not well detailed. The game compensates for that by making cut scenes out of comic strips.

The music in the background is forgettable, and all the language heard is all in Japanese. Most of the voice is translated through subtitles.

Lastly is game play. Fighting on the ground is simple, but enjoyable. You'd think using the touchscreen to evade would be an awful technique, but it actually works well. The worst part of game play is air combat. Through about 70% of the game, you have to float in the air to fight. But because the game doesn't allow you to move small distances in the air, you're pretty much forced to take all the hits directed your way. All projectiles do damage. Even when you're charging with a homing kick. That's a major flaw.

All in all, it's not a game that will help the Vita take off.

What All PS Vita Game Should Be Doing!

Gravity rush uses all the cool new features of the ps vita and is a wonderful story. The controls are not only straightforward, but more natural. It does have minor calibration issues and sensitivity, but mostly (and the reason I gave it a 9) it's a bit too green. Definitely recommend to all ps vita owners.

With games like this and LittleBigPlanet I don't understand how people can say the Vita has no games. This is one of the best handheld games I've ever played and definitely should be played by more people. The combat reminds me of the Batman Arkham games. The visual style is really unique and the animation is amazing for a handheld. The story is alright, but the comic book presentation is really what drive it for me. Finally a game with a unique premise that actually works good in practice.

Only thing i would change is, to have the option to turn the Gyroscope functionality on or off.
It got super annoying when you are trying to focus on attacking an enemy while gravity shifting, only to have your Gravity Kicks go way off course because you slightly tilted your Vita. It's not that big of a problem but, it can get in way. Especially during tough boss battles.
Other than that, great game.
+ Great story, Great game mechanics, Easy Platinum.
- Gyroscope functionality can get annoying.

Gravity Rush is an extremely redundant game. You basically do the same thing over and over, with only slight variety here and there to distinguish one experience to the next. Add in some awkward touch controls and a fidgity camera and the game loses it's appeal pretty quick. It's a shame too, because it starts off good and does some pretty cool things, but in the end just becomes pretty dull and boring.

Like playing an anime

This is probably one of the top three titles out now for the Vita. It's a light game with a whimsical story and fun gameplay. It's not like the obnoxious anime style in many current JRPGS, it's actually bearable.

The flying and gravity changing mechanics are fairly unique even compared to console games and I'm surprised they pulled it off. The graphics are gorgeous, almost like a Hayao Miyazaki film, and the music is pleasant enough.

The game's an open world with three major areas. The city has heavy European influences. The map system is excellent, it feels kind of like controlling Google Maps on your phone. It's done by touch screen and the menu system is simplistic and well-done.

The plot is airy, but engaging. It's like one of those old 90s anime movies you'd see on a late Saturday night on the Sci-Fi channel.

I loved flying around slamming into giant monsters, but many times I'd have trouble actually hitting one. Sometimes the camera gets so wonky. Not only does the right stick move the camera, but the Vita's tilt function also changes the perspective. It can get annoying. Luckily there's no pelting of a hundred projectiles throwing you off like in many Japanese games. Combat never gets too difficult. The balance is nice - note there is no difficulty setting.

There is free roam after beating it, but there's not much to do except collectibles and upgrades. You can redo challenges all over the map. I finished the main story and challenges (up to bronze only) in about 12 hours.

This is a must play for the Vita.

Unique Level of Gameplay

Gravity Rush features a very unique style of gameplay where you manipulate the gravity around you to basically "fall" in any direction you want. The controls are easy to learn as all you have to do is press R, aim where you want to fall, and then R again. Mastering the capabilities is another story. With the shear variety of modifying your physics breaking free falls, you will always find a new way to approach any task.

Now enter the Nevi, your enemy in this world. Engage in ground combat or take it to the air as you try to take down dozens of unique enemies that require different touches. For many, simply foot-to-face combat on the ground will be good enough. For others, create a stasis field around you and utilize objects in your surrounding as a deadly weapon. Or just bring the fight to the fliers with the Gravity Kick, a homing attack that launches you at terminal velocity towards your prey.

As you progress in the story and explore the world around you, you will collect gems which can be used to unlock bonus side missions or upgrade your abilities.

Graphics are spectacular. A cel-shaded world brings anime to life as you roam around completing tasks, talking to people, or just exploring the limitless potential of your powers as a Shifter.

The story is told in classic still frame conversations and beautifully hand drawn, comic book style cutscenes that you can alter by tilting and rotating your Vita.

The biggest drawback about Gravity Rush must be the motion controls. While one ability logically requires it (Gravity Slide), the ability to tilt your Vita during the anti-gravity phases to pick where to fall or attack. While many might find this to be helpful, the reason I find it to be a drawback is that combat is so fast paced, you can easily mess yourself up in the heat of battle by fighting your motion control to fine tune your next attack, or even your escape.

Overall, Gravity Rush is a great game for rent or buy.

A must play for vita owners

I thought this game was very good. The graphics are really cool, almost like a cellshading/anime graphics. The story is good, the character development is good. The gameplay and controls are good and it utiilizes all of the vita's capabilities like the tilt, touch, back touch, and even motion sensing like the ability to jump by flicking the vita upwards. The only problem I have with this game is the fighting and the flying are sometimes difficult since there is no lock on feature and you can get wound up confused to where you are at and where the enemies are at as well, but overall nicely done game.

This game was amazing. sometimes it looks a liittle fuzzy but overall this game is great. i like how u can "fall" to anywhere. and being able to upgrade almost everything u got helps a lot. i like the whole concept of the game. u can tell they put a lot of time and effort into this tittle. also its in japanese, with subtitles. i wish metal gear was like that. anyway the boss fights are great, the whole control of the fighting mechanics is awesome. so if your up for a super heroine, pick this one up. i highly recommend it. :D i give this a 9.9 out of 10.

I liked the game mechanics and the graphics/controls but there is a lot of pointless farming and the game ultimately becomes repetitive.

Great game, engaging story and characters. Not too long of a story though without add ons, maybe 15 hours. Creative controls and game-play give it a feel all of its own. At times can be dizzying. Is definitely worth the time.

Overview
==================
Simply put it is nice to get a totally original game for the PS Vita. Gravity Rush felt to me like a platforming action game. You play as Kat and as the name would indicate can control gravity via a cat (Dusty).

There are 21 total chapters so it makes for a decent length game and provides some replayability for completionists. For me it was a good rent, but I didn't have a desire to play it again.

The biggest issue for me was the controls. You are kind of a super hero type, but the less than tight controls make you feel very ordinary. You end up relying a special moves which don't require much aiming to overcome basic control issues.

However, all that being said I enjoyed the game. The story was good and has a Japanese style. The artwork is very cool and many sequences play out as comic books.

Pros
===============
1) good story
2) original game
3) neat art style and comic like feeling

Cons
===============
1) controls just weren't tight enough

Solid title that lacks in important areas.

This game could have been great but instead I have feel it is just average. The controls are wonky and the story is lack luster at first to the point of being lame.

Starting out is really cool with some awesome monster fighting and the first time you use your new gravity controlling powers you get a rush.

After the game gets going to start to feel kinda teenage angst when your first quest is to furnish the heroines new home in the sewers. So after you go around the city collecting lamps and beds and such you get to a quest where you have to use your new powers to sneak. Which was pretty cool.

Only then you get to some decent combat in the game only to find there is no lock on feature which for this title would have made a world of difference in all combat situations.

When in combat you need to more often then not shift through the air changing directions and using a not so homing attack to kick your opponents shiny weak spots. This would be awesome if you did not have to stop in mid air to change directions effectively. Not to mention that since the right stick now changes your direction the vita tilt out of nowhere controls the camera more often then not leaving your upside down and disoriented.

Worst part of this game by far is the combat and fighting controls and mechanics. The game itself is quite good by the end and the story telling picks up and has a very charming graphic novel appeal as well as voice acting and cinematic.

If it was not for the lackluster controls I would herald this as a must own game. As such rent and get a feel for it as some might just not be able to put up with the control scheme.
