GoldenEye: Rogue Agent is a game that should never be confused with the N64 masterpiece Goldeneye 007. In fact, you don't even play 007. In fact, 007 dies in the first mission. At this point you realize the game developers are creating some alternate James Bond universe and you're stuck playing in it.
In a nutshell, you play a rogue agent (duh) who gets hired by Goldfinger to gain an upper hand on Dr. No. Strangely, since this is bizarro James Bond land, the supposedly dead characters from the series are back for you to kill in a whole new way. You get branded GoldenEye, as they upgrade your retina upgraded with a few special abilities.
For the most part, these abilities have limited use. You might throw up the shield once in a while if you get in a tight spot or use the hacking device to access bridges or environmental traps. But for the most part, these are extraneous.
What sinks this game is the gameplay. Somehow, the shooting part of the game isn't very good. And that's inexcusable considering it's an FPS. Like Halo 2, you can hold two small weapons at a time, or one large or a small and default weapon, like grenades. However, it doesn't allow you to toggle between two weapons, so you're stuck with one until you wrangle another. You can't jump (hey, why would a secret agent need to jump, right?). Targeting controls are jerky, which makes aiming tricky.
It's hard to recommend a shooter that can't get the shooting part right. I mean, the original Goldeneye on the N64 had revolutionary controls and the original Halo brought shooting controls to near perfection. How this game got off the mark is beyond me.
Shooting goons and blowing stuff up is fun. Then again, you can do the same thing in every other FPS. You can play it, but you can also play tons of better shooters. It's your call.
