god of war ascension does have many similarities to its pass brethren although not as epic in the story department it still really good. what i felt the story was pushing was the multiplayer. weapons like in any multiplayer game do not last and kratos like your multiplayer character/s play very simlarly. do not get my intentions wrong the story isnt a complete training dummy for multiplayer but more of a replayability. like many storry only games there is a limit on replayability before they end in the back of your closet collecting cobwebs. multiplayer is one way to alleviate that. the story has almost all the elements that you would expect.
the multiplayer consits of you chossing to fight for one of the four selectable gods. each also hosting there own benefits.
for those that plaued the beta do not fret there are more weapons available than before some of the unlock requirements have changed. the multiplayer also has your classic game modes; like capture the flag death match and also a coop mode..etc.
I deem this game worthy of a buy due to its good story and great multiplayer.
if you choose to rent the game i would reccomend dishig the money for the online pass to check out the multiplayer
Okay, well, anyone that's looked at any reviews knows that everyone agrees that this is the weakest entry in the series. And I can tell you that that is absolutely true. PSP titles included.
First and foremost, it has a single player, so don't think this is the multiplayer only game they hyped it up to be. That being said, it's an incredibly weak single player campaign.
Now, I believe that they wanted to make a game, try a multiplayer system out, but they wanted a bigger budget or needed to make sure they'd make some money off the title so they through the GOW name on it, which is fine, but I honestly think it would have been a better game if it wasn't GOW. Because now, it makes a not so terrible game seem that much worse because we compare it to the other games in the series. Now, lets not get all crazy and act like GOW is this perfectly built game, it's always had flaws, plot holes, cheesey-ness and other issues but, it's always been fun.
This game is boring. There's missing sounds, music, almost no dialogue. Kratos even acts like he's bored despite mosters, falling buildings, near death situations and the like.
Now it's not all bad. Gameplay is solid and graphics are even better than GOW3. But that only goes so far 4 titles in.

This was a very strange gaming experience for me. I am a huge fan of the series, and this is definitely it's weakest link (Including the PSP games). The story is satisfying and the set-pieces are [as always] AMAZING! And thats the main thing that kept me playing. This series is one of the few games that still gives me that "I need to keep going so I can see the next level" feeling. And Ascension held that up superbly. It was however lacking in many other areas. The jumping mechanic was sloppy and irritating. I died many many times just because Kratos missed a landing on a simple jump from point a to point b over a tiny gap. Also, the difficulty is not very well balanced, I found my self irritated as opposed to challenged like I was on the other installments. And I miss full the arsenal of weaponry and gadgets you get in the other games. There are a few new additions however that are wonderful. Such as grabbing an enemy and wailing on them while dodging their defense attacks was awesome and I loved doing it each time.
If you are already a fan of the series you do need to play this. You will end up liking it in the end despite wanting to stop playing it several times throughout. At one point I almost just took it out and returned it without finishing. But the story kept me going until the end. I doubt I will ever play it again, but I am glad to have played it the once. I hope whoever makes the next one gets it together a little better. Santa Monica is a wonderful studio... and they definitely made an amazingly beautiful if slightly flawed game.
