Story: As with the previous titles in this series, the game focuses on protagonist, Kratos a Spartan warrior who is haunted by his past after he forefeited himself to the God of War, Ares to destroy his enemies in battle. His consumption of power led him to killing numerous people, notably his wife and daughter. He blames Ares for his actions and breaks his oath with him. The game is a prequel to the the first original God of War game and begins with his incarceration at the Prison of the Damned. He breaks free, escapes, and the remainder of the story centers around Kratos quest for vengeance.
Graphics/controls: Graphics, level design, and character detail are impressive. The controls are pretty straightforward and the optional hint system is especially helpful for the player's learning curve. The main issue is the inability to manipulate the camera angles to the player's likely, but if one has played previous God of War games, it's not that big of a deal.
Gameplay: As with all the games in this series, the fundamental gameplay is essentially identical. It is a 3rd person hack & slash involving combo-based close quarter combat, boss battles, "mini games" (i.e. slow motion following of specific button instructions), power ups, and puzzle solving. Kratos has a health and magic meter that can grow as you make progress in the game by collecting Gorgon's eyes and Phoenix feathers via treasure chests scattered throughout the levels. Kratos is able to earn power ups by collecting red orbs by killing enemies, opening red treasure chests, and destroying destructable objects. The single player has good length (about 8-10 hours) and has replay value by playing it again at a higher difficulty and/or using artifacts collected during your 1st playthrough.
Overall, the game is very good in general, but by God of War standards, it doesn't really offer anything new. The most notable new feature is multiplayer (though I didn't try it). That being said, it's still worth play
this game was so terrible i probably got 2 hours in and could not force myself to play it anymore. I feel like the combat has no flow like the previous games and was a very tedious task to get through the fights. Single player also feels like it was put together in a hurry because some animations were too fast and not adequately displayed (such as jumping from a ledge onto another ledge or ladder)
This is the same game as the previous 2 versions. Nothing has been added in the way of game play. Also, the storyline could use a little more love. I got to the a point in the game, 1 level from the end of the game mind you, where the enemies were nearly impossible and the battles were so repetitive that I turned on the game and just packed it in and shipped it back. This game is merely good enough to kill an afternoon, no replay factor at all.
