I'm not sophisticated enough to appreciate this

Apparently some consider this movie to be a classic.
I am not in that camp.
This movie is terrible, even for its time (and I am a fringe fan of zombie pictures and a very patient movie consumer).
The plot was really appealing. The dead rise, feed on the living, and a band of survivors take refuge in a shopping mall and try to survive.
Unfortunately, the dialog is ridiculous, the actors are unconvincing, and the effects are laughable. The makeup on the other hand was excellent.
Way too many scenes of the dead wandering around. Take those out and the movie would be 30 merciful minutes shorter and be better for it.
In the end, this is almost unwatchable. I gave it a score of 1 because it would be hard for it to get any worse.
