This game runs into trouble early and just never gets outof its rut.
First of when you start the game all but promises a tutorial(a character actually says "I'll teach you how to fight"), but never actually delivers. Which is a huge problem because on both the strategic map and the battlefield there is ALOT of choices (all abbreviated to save space on the small PSP screen) so jumping in is really quite hard. I've had this game for about 4 weeks and im still discovering things.
Which is too bad because on the strategic map the game plays very well. you maneuver your troops to block your enemys advance, capture prisoners, bribe enemy commanders, reinforce your towns, gain territory, and build new helpful buildings. as well as pay your commanders and subvert those prisoners, go shopping, reinforce commanders, distribute items and weapons and so on.
If this game stopped there it would be a decent game probably a 7 or 8. but the battles destroy that happy little fantasty. Though touted as this games strong point the battles are VERY VERY VERY slow and clunky and the PSP's hardware is pushed to the limit with 60 characters as well as a overly large 3-D enviroment(that actually doesnt look good). I timed the time it took to cast a spell under 2 circumstances 1) when everyone was on the map and 2) when it was just the commanders
the diffrence was 4 seconds to 1/3 of a second! + EVERYTHING that happens has a loading screen. Whats even more disapointing is that more important that the formation and tactics you choose are the weather and what your units are. Like frogmen normally a VERY weak unit, in the rain they become super charged and become a middling unit. But thats all pointless really as the combat falls to your commanders. basically your commanders usually endup duking it out with the one with more HP winning. Additionaly most of your comanders are essential so if they die you lose. and in any case only about 1 in 10 commanders are anygood anyway
