If you are like me and remember spending plenty of exciting hours fighting bad guys turn-by-turn in the old front missions on PS2; run as far away as possible from this game!
Instead of sticking to their unique formula of turn based strategy, Front Mission scraps it all and instead tries to copy the Armored Core series. Ditching the turn-based strategy that was like a future advanced chess game with robot, they have instead elected for a third person shooter. The problem: They fail epically at it. The controls are clunky, the weapons are weak, and the graphics are terrible. If you want mechanized action, you're better off with Armored Core. At least their games look decent.
Final Review: 1 Why?: Because Front Mission does nothing to distinguish itself, it only tries to copy already established series in hopes of pulling in a new audience while throwing away it's following of turn-based strategy lovers. On top of that, graphics, sound, and gameplay all suck. The only notable good thing is the cut scenes, but if I want to play a game for it's cut scenes, i'll choose Final Fantasy.
If your looking for a frustrating game then give this a rent. The bosses are insanely difficult even on easy mode. The rest of the game you can stroll and have little to no challenge on hard mode. The Wanzers are easy to customize, but for the bosses you can only win by having what the game wants you to have. Its pure luck if your customized Wanzer last the first 4 seconds of a boss battle. The acting its almost comical by the end. The reactions and speech are so spread apart its hard to take it seriously. For me Front Mission Evolved did nothing of the sort. It de-evolved into something more of a joke.

While the previous entries in the series were all turn based strategic games and this is a FPS, I had hoped that some of the feel or strategic element would persist. I was wrong.
This is Call of Duty: Giant Robot Warfare.
This game requires quick twitch reflexes and a lot of button mashing. Even the wanzers are ridiculously fast. You never get the sense that you are in a large steel machine. One part of the enjoyment in the previous titles was the ability to control whole squads with different roles. In this, your AI teammates are universally useless. You are the only useful member and you are unable to really specialize in a role. You need to be equipped to handle long range, close range, and melee combat because your teammates can't be counted on to provide any of those roles.
Even as a shooter goes it is pretty mediocre.
I can't recommend this to anyone.
It doesn't play like a strategic RTS. It doesn't play like a giant robot "mechwarrior" style game. It does play like a poor version of Halo. If you are looking for something like that, just go play Halo or one of the good FPS games.
