I've only ever played FF 7, 9, and 10; so I'm not a huge fan of the series, but this game is outstanding. I have to point out that on the plus side, the graphics are great, the soundtrack is decent, and the battle system is awesome once you get the hang of it (which doesn't take long).
On the flip, the most obvious downside is the melodrama that brings down all of the Final Fantasy games I've played. It seems as though FF's creators don't have the slightest idea of how to employ subtlety in storytelling; everything here is heavy handed to the point of "Adam West in Batman" rediculous. There are multiple screams of "Here comes your hero!" from the same character early in the game. Also in order to keep the graphics and plot cohesive the game is very linear in the beginning, so there is almost no exploring. If you can look past that though, the game is very rewarding. If you don't have a lot of patience or can't stand overacting, you might want to skip this one.
