Where we had great Final Fantasy's like FF6, FF7, FF9, FF1, FF4, and FFX where the game had it's basic turn based battle system and fighting enemies and leveling up (sphere grid in FFX) and going to fight epic bosses and super bosses and have fun doing it with an epic story in the process.....we get FFXII, the failed child of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic that Square tried to pass of as "new and original".
The battle system is basically ripped straight out of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. You can run around and press the attack option and wait for your character to attack or you can use a spell/force power to damage enemies. Though Knights of the Old Republic did it faster and you didn't have to wait for 7 seconds to attack an enemy from the start. You can also flee from a battle in FFXII just like you could in KOTOR. Also if you don't believe me and think that FFXII came first, go and check the dates when the games were made. KOTOR's 1 and 2 were released in 2003 and 2004, FFXII was released in 2005 and Bioware started earlier on the development of KOTOR than when Square started on FFXII.
Now for the characters, instead of getting interesting characters such as Terra, Locke, Cid Highwind, Zidane, Stiener, or Cecil.......We get Van and his unrealistic female sidekick Penelo, joining up with the most unrealitic characters ever put on paper. Ache - a princess who wants to liberate her kingdom from an evil mastermind (sounds like a plot already done in FF9, remember Garnet?), Basch - A captain who was branded a traitor because of a double killing some random person, and Balthier - Probably the most believable of all of them. There are others but there is not enough characters to write here.
The story tries to capture the old FF titles but fails miserably and ends up being one of the most cleched stories of all time. Basically just a throw in a bunch of characters and a random story and just run with it, what the heck was Square on?
