A High Budget Game That Isn't More of the Same

Graphics: I'm usually the one to say graphics aren't the most important thing in a game, but I'm fed up with the color brown. If you're going to make an HD game, use all the colors. Far Cry 3 uses the whole, sharp palette. And lets not forget the weapons you see all the time, customizable both cosmetically and tactically and have cool reloading animations. And the fire! Oh man, this is probably the only game where I used molotov cocktails more than grenades because of the way fire spreads. I'm no arsonist, but fire that realistic is a work of art.
Sound: The wild animals roaring, the guns firing, the wind beneath your wingsuit. It's all here. Each weapon having a distinct sound gives them their own feel. The chatter of the multicultural NPCs sound pretty good, even if the lines do feel a little recycled. "This is all me," was heard a little more than I'd expect. The soundtrack more than makes up for it, with a few licensed tracks, some pretty energetic electronic battle music, and the quirky ingame car radios.
Gameplay: The progression is simple yet effective, with only 3 skill trees but plenty of cool skills to learn (my personal favorite is the knife-throw takedown). The radio towers were something boring that they made interesting by making each one a different climbing puzzle which i thought was nice. The story seems kind of bland at first but as you play you realize it was intentional. There are plenty of side missions to enjoy, too. The mission structure is pretty linear but how you address each situation is up to you and thats what I think makes a phenomenal open world adventure. What really matters is the "feel" of the game, and it controls very nicely. Smooth gunplay, nice variety of silent takedowns, and a highly mobile player-character makes this fun to play.
In summary I'd go so far as to say Far Cry 3 is the best open world adventure of 2012. "Skyrim with guns" isn't an accurate description. An open world with tons of carnage is.
