I'm very disappointed in certain aspects of this game.
With that being said, I will mention the pros.
Pros=Gameplay is very similar to FIFA 09 during live action, which is a good thing.
The new slow-motion action shots when putting a shot on goal are different, and a nice touch.
The main menu is very streamlined liked Madden NFL 10 for Wii.
They still have Manager Mode but it's now called Battle for Glory.
TIME! I was not able to change the game length in Battle for Glory, only in Exhibition or Quick Game. The length of a match in Battle for Glory mode is too quick, like 4 min halves! Why did they do this, a staple was to pick how long you wanted to play!
Free Kicks: You have to shake your remote when the ball is about to be kicked to put a direct shot on goal. This screen is very touchy and is difficult to accomplish.
Saving Free Kicks: Difficult as well. You have to shake the remote when the ball is in the air and highlighted green to save it. If not, the ball is going in the back of the net, whether from just outside the area or midfield.
That left me with a very NBA Jam-ish "He's on Fire" feeling, can shoot from anywhere feeling. After I saw a goal go in off a free kick from midfield, I shipped the game back the next day.
Get FIFA 09 if you have to get a FIFA game for Wii. At least you can tailor your game lengths.
Maybe it's because I got used to Pro Evolution Soccer, but I thought I was going to be able to pick up on the controls and interface quickly. I did not like the menu options and the way the game was presented.
The controls were the hardest part - they give you the 3 options, and after working with it, I decided all 3 options were not that good. The instructions provided were really lame - just a screenshot!? A game with complex controls like this NEEDS a tutorial section to practice the moves.
Although I was liking the "appearance" or graphics of this one over the PES, when playing it, the weakness(es) in gameplay are really evident. Team setup and playing modes were really confusing too. After hours of frustration and lack of fun, I sent this one back!
I don't write reviews but I had to quickly put something down for the FIFA 10. I had read mixed reviews of FIFA 10 and decided to rent it rather than buy and I am glad I did!
FIFA 10 is a great game if you are a casual player. It comic book-like screens and especially the game sound effects do remind me of NBA Jam. It's a fun game in a pacman sort of way. But if you are like me and have played every edition since FIFA 96, then you will be sorely disappointed. It's missing true manager features and hence that game mode is now called "Battle for Glory". Online gameplay is vastly improved though and I am yet to experience any lag or abrupt disconnections during play.
In conclusion, I believe that EA has fully committed to developing a casual gaming version of FIFA for the Wii and a full featured version for the Xbox360 and PS3. So knowing the Wii's target market, you will not be surprised by EA's direction with FIFA10 on the Wii. If you are a soccer simulation gamer then you need to look to Xbox 360 and PS3 otherwise FIFA10 Wii will do quite nicely.
