IGN Preview of Eye of Judgment
Eye of Judgment is the unique PS3 title that hit Sony's system late last year, making use of the PlayStation Eye in conjunction with actual playing cards to create a visually enticing card battle experience. We definitely
enjoyed the game when it was first released, but fans of the unorthodox title might have a desire for even more content. Well next week, Biolith Rebellion 2, the first expansion pack for Eye of Judgment, will be available. In light of this upcoming release, we sat down, unfolded our play mat and set up the almighty PlayStation Eye for a little quality time with this digital card game.
Before we break down our impressions of the expansion, it's important to note just how you'll be able to get your hands on the second set come March 27th. In order to play with the 100 new cards included, you'll need to download the actual expansion from the PlayStation Store for $14.99. This download will enable you to play with the new cards, though a free network update will allow you to play against people who have the expansion pack, if you don't want to pay for the content yourself.
But once you've installed the expansion pack, you need to go out and buy new booster packs, which are generally priced at $3.99.
Our concern (and perhaps your concern as well) is the cost of this expansion. You have to pay about fifteen dollars just to enable your ability to play with the new cards, and you have to pay even more to purchase the cards themselves. We were a little discouraged by that fact, but most card game enthusiasts are well aware of the high cost of playing.
Those issues aside, Biolith Rebellion 2 seems to work perfectly after the install and your trusty PlayStation Eye will recognize the new cards without a problem. We were able to try out an entire deck's worth of new creatures and they seem to perform admirably. All the new cards are structured in just about the same way as the previous set, though there are a number of new abilities implemented in some creatures. For example, the Far Land Sand Dog possesses the "Decoy" ability, which draws enemy attacks away from your other characters.
Another cool card was the Biolith Battleship, which uses a new technique called Intercept to attack every other creature your opponent summons onto the field. These expanded abilities, along with all the other creatures and spells at your disposal, will definitely diversify players' decks and give Eye of Judgment a fresh feel.
As interesting as the new cards and abilities are, we were still somewhat disappointed by the lack of new modes or options available to Eye of Judgment fans. Although there are apparently a few changes made to the game's HUD and other minor systems, we didn't notice much of a difference and the overall experience is essentially untouched (which, in a certain sense, may be preferable to some).
We were hoping that more modes -- even a small story mode to flesh out the world -- might have been included among the additions, but that doesn't seem to be the case. However, the
official PlayStation blog has hinted in the past that "special matches" might be implemented at a later date, so we'll just have to wait and see.
Even if a few minor tweaks to match setup are addressed, you still might be wondering whether Biolith Rebellion 2 is worth the money. Everything works well and the new cards will definitely expand on deck possibilities, but you can't avoid the fact that the new cards have an "entrance fee" of fifteen bucks. If you're willing to spend the money (on the download and subsequent booster packs), then Eye of Judgment fans should be very pleased with what they find. We had a good time trying out the new cards and you should too.
