Hardcore dungeon crawler that improves on the 1st!

This is definitely a game that does not apply to everyone. It is an old-school style pen and paper dungeon crawling RPG, except in place of the pen and paper you use your DS. You map out the dungeons on your bottom screen while exploring the dungeon on the top. Monsters appear which you have to fight, all of which are creative and very well designed. There are of course bosses, quests, and many many types of character classes to choose from!

If you are looking for an RPG that will last you a long long while, and will keep you hooked the whole time, look no further. If you played the first Etrian Odyssey and liked it at ALL you definitely need to check this one out.

They made quite a few improvements over the previous version, the graphics of course are a little enhanced, they have all new character classes, weapons, items, and more. Of course all new dungeons and monsters. The mapping system now has more icons you can use which come in VERY handy in the more complex dungeons. Many tweaks and various improvements have been made to make it feel great overall.

Lastly, the soundtrack is AMAZING, one of my favorite soundtracks for any hand-held system by far, and even rivaling some of it's larger and more powerful counterpart's soundtracks.

For what this game sets out to do it is AMAZING, and I thank Atlus so much for bringing over and doing a great job with the localization. Definitely give this game a look!

This game has a really good customization as far as partys go but the leveling up can take a while. Very good game with lots of play time. Not recommended for beginners to dungeon crawling games.

Disclaimer: I played this for about 4 hours and got to floor 2 (out of 30, apparently) then stopped. Maybe the game gets wicked awesome, but the start is a painful grind-fest. Here are some highlights:

There's one mythical dungeon that needs exploring. You build your own team, picking from a list of character types. They all start with the same cheap equipment. They also start with three skill points, and gain ONE every level. The skill tree takes a couple hundred points to finish for each character.

The enemies don't drop gold. They drop items sometimes, which can be sold for money. Everything in this game costs, including reviving, resting, storing items, and of course equipment. The start of the game is so stingy you spend all your time grinding on the bottom floor to get what you need.

You draw your own map. Yeah, this is kind of cool, but not nearly as cool as you think, trust me. The game will paint in the floors for you, and you can put little icons on the map to note stuff you want to remember. I wanted to love this part, but I realized that if the game was any fun I wouldn't care about who got to do the map.

There are quests, presumably. You get one mission quest early (read: tutorial) and some item harvesting stuff in the inn, but there aren't many in the beginning, and the dungeon is too punishing early on for you to hustle up the floors to find more.

Long story short, this game is a numbers-grinding slog-fest. People love it, I know, but it wasn't my cup of tea.
