Dragon's Dogma is at times brilliant, thrilling, and deeply entertaining, and at other times incredibly frustrating and unforgiving.
Combat: Skirmishes are brutal, interactive, and incredibly fun (especially boss fights). Scaling the back of a cyclops to gouge it in the eyes with a sword is rewarding, challenging, and exhilarating.
Atmosphere/ambiance: Exploring the world of DD can be one of the scariest task that you'll do. All kinds of creatures can appear and visibility is almost always obscured. DD does not indicate enemies on the mini-map (which is more or less useless anyhow) and rightfully so, for the lack of visibility gives your adventure a sense of reality and danger.
Pawns: This is what makes DD unique. "Pawns" are basically the other three people who make up your party. The catch is that you have a "main pawn" who iyou make, while the other two are the "main pawns" of other DD players whom you can freely DL. Your main pawn can be used at anytime by other DD players (even if you are offline) and can return with gifts (this in effect serves as an informal player-player trade system).
For one, there is a limited fast-travel system and, really, you will not be "fast-traveling" until a second play-through. 99% of the time you will be walking from point A to point B. The problem is that Gransys is a freaking huge swath of land. Mid-way through the game I half-expected to discover the possibility of riding some winged creature but sadly this never came and my feet remained my primary mode of transport. For me, this was the most frustrating thing because there were some quests that had you run half-way across the map only to have you run back!
Unforgiving/frustrating mechanics: 1) The auto-save is the strangest thing there is --- always manual save. 2)Romance system is convoluted and vague, and can potentially screw you over in the end. 3) Escort quests serve as CAPCOM's middle-finger to players. 4) One NPC to change vocation.
The biggest flaw in this game is the fast travel. You have to travel far, often and early. I dont mind putting many hours into a game but not to just run back and forth. If you want an awesome action filled RPG, play reckoning. Its better then skyrim in my opinion and I am a skyrim fan.
