This game is kind of amusing to me since it honestly feels like the story is apologizing to the player that it has to get in the way of killing things from time to time.
And honestly it isn't entirely a bad thing. The game's greatest strengths lie in its battle system and co-op allies that honestly help out. And appropriately enough the weakest points are everything to do with the story (the sordid dialogue, the non-existent contrived plot, the fake olde tyme speech, etc).
So, what I'm getting at is if you want a game where you just jump into a fantasy world and start killing as many big monsters as possible with the courtesy additions of armor and stat upgrades for yourself and this party - you owe it to yourself to at least rent this game.
I only played this game for a couple hours before sending it back, not because it was so horrible, It was really just because it seemed like a time suck. Story was good, gameplay was acceptable, my biggest complaint is with the questing and mapping system. You dont know where it wants you to go. Example, there is a quest that you get in the church right after you create your character, the priest says to help him look around the area for a book, he starts looking around the area inside the church so i think it must be in here. There are a batch of things that i can pick up and inventory or trow around and I dont see what he is looking for. After about 5 mins and destroying everything I could in the church I leave to do some more exploring. After my exit of the church a boy comes up to me and says that he has lost the book, but is not sure where. GREAT! I'll just look in my map... which helps in no way shape or form. Looking at the quest sheets were not much help either, one said location unknown and the others I didn't see on the map.
Anyway, that is really the reason I turned the game back in, I dont like not knowing where to go or just stumbling upon the right path. Character's customization was good. Pawns were a little puzzling, not sure who the pawns are in the vortex world that I can add to my team but some were many levels higher than me.
