Mindless violence and bad jokes as a diversion...

For those unfamiliar with the DAH franchise - the games are about a small-statured alien named Crypto on a mission to gather human brains (and cause all sorts of collateral damage) in a Grand Theft Auto-esque romp stuffed to the gills with pop culture references and bad (though at times pleasingly violent) comedy. "Path of Furon" is the latest entry in the series, signifying Crypto's arrival on next-gen consoles (at least, the X360). The short of it is - your character runs around several fairly sprawling if somewhat bland cityscapes, causing as much random mayhem as he pleases (causing excess mayhem, naturally, results in the cops and eventually the army showing up to stop you) while carrying out a string of appropriately violent storyline and bonus missions. Occasionally, Crypto will need to use his trusty flying saucer to cause even greater damage. Missions and tasks can range from body-snatching prostitutes to hurling passers-by through a giant donut to causing at least $1 billion worth of property damage in under ten minutes, with just about everything in between...
Naturally, there is a weapons and powers upgrade system, but by the last stage the player should have most of that covered without really trying. The real appeal of the series is blending mindless destructive rampages with the occasional send-up of Kung Fu movies, Sonny and Cher, mobsters, and so forth. This is NOT a game to play if one expects a deep story, stirring dialogue, inventive missions or even good taste. There are also more than a couple of bugs that cause some occasional grief (from clipping errors to downright crashes). But perhaps this game is worth it as an occasional diversion, even if the novelty of the series is beginning to wear off. The fact that the game's difficulty has apparently been set to "cruise control" (in most cases - there are still a couple of missions that require considerable cunning or manual dexterity) adds to the "kill time destroying the world" ambiance.
